Ingredients
For the Biscuit Dough:
-
2½ cups all-purpose flour
-
1 tbsp baking powder
-
1 tbsp granulated sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
2 cups buttermilk (or 2 cups milk + 2 tbsp lemon juice)
-
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
-
1½ cups diced turkey ham
-
1 tsp garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
For the Butter Base:
-
½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat and Prepare the Pan
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
Pour the melted butter into the bottom of your baking dish, spreading it evenly to coat the bottom.
Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and garlic powder.
Make sure everything is evenly combined to avoid pockets of baking powder.
Step 3: Add Cheese and Turkey Ham
Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and diced turkey ham. Toss them gently in the flour mixture so they’re evenly distributed.
Step 4: Add the Buttermilk
Pour the buttermilk into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
Do not overmix—the dough will be a bit wet and sticky, which is perfect.
Step 5: Transfer to Baking Dish
Carefully scoop or pour the dough into the buttered baking dish.
Use a spatula to gently spread the dough to the edges. The butter will rise up the sides—this is what gives the biscuit that golden, crispy edge.
Step 6: Score the Dough
Use a knife to lightly score the dough into 9 equal squares. This makes it easier to slice after baking and helps with even cooking.
Step 7: Bake
Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25–28 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Step 8: Cool Slightly and Serve
Let the biscuits rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
Don’t Overmix – Mix just until the dough comes together. Overmixing will make the biscuits tough.
Use Real Butter – For that rich, indulgent flavor and crispy golden edges.
Freshly Grated Cheese – Melts better than pre-shredded and has more flavor.
Customize It – Try adding chopped green onions, a pinch of cayenne, or a different cheese blend.
