Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk, for egg wash

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

  1. In a small bowl, mix warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2: Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, and salt together.
  2. Add the yeast mixture and eggs, then mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead for 5-7 minutes using a stand mixer or by hand.
  4. Gradually add butter, one tablespoon at a time, kneading until fully incorporated and dough is smooth.

Step 3: Let the Dough Rise

  1. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 ½ – 2 hours or until doubled in size.

Step 4: Shape and Braid

  1. Punch down the dough and divide into three equal pieces.
  2. Roll each piece into a 12-inch rope.
  3. Pinch the three ropes together at the top and braid them.
  4. Tuck the ends under and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 5: Second Rise

  1. Cover loosely and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.

Step 6: Bake to Golden Perfection

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Brush the braided dough with egg wash.
  3. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

Use Room-Temperature Ingredients – Ensures an even, smooth dough.
Don’t Skip the Second Rise – This makes the bread extra light and fluffy.
For a Richer Flavor – Let the dough rise overnight in the fridge!
