Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)

For the Onion & Mushroom Gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional but delicious)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon thyme (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard until combined.
  2. Form into 4-5 oval-shaped patties.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned. Remove and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Onion & Mushroom Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes, until soft and caramelized.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms, stirring for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste.
  5. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any bits from the pan.
  6. Add salt, black pepper, and thyme, then simmer for 5 minutes until thickened.

Step 3: Smother the Hamburger Steaks

  1. Return the hamburger patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them.
  2. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Step 4: Serve & Enjoy

  1. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, with extra gravy on top.
  2. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 Ground Beef – A little fat keeps the patties juicy and flavorful.
  • Don’t Overmix the Meat – Overworking the beef can make the patties tough.
  • Let the Steaks Rest in the Gravy – The longer they simmer, the more flavorful they get!
  • Make it Extra Creamy – Stir in ¼ cup heavy cream at the end for a richer gravy.
