Ingredients

For the Dough (Homemade or Shortcut):
1 sheet puff pastry (thawed) or
1 batch of your favorite homemade yeast dough

For the Filling:
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
⅓ cup brown sugar (light or dark)
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Optional Glaze:
½ cup powdered sugar
1–2 tablespoons milk
¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C)
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper

Step 2: Prepare the Filling
In a small bowl, mix together melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well combined

Step 3: Roll Out the Dough
If using puff pastry, unfold and lightly roll out into a 10×12-inch rectangle
If using homemade dough, roll it to about the same size on a lightly floured surface

Step 4: Add the Filling
Spread the cinnamon-sugar butter mixture evenly over the entire surface of the dough

Step 5: Fold and Cut
Fold the dough in half lengthwise (like closing a book)
Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut into 1-inch wide strips
Twist each strip 2–3 times and place on the prepared baking sheet, spacing evenly

Step 6: Bake the Twists
Bake for 15–20 minutes or until puffed and golden brown
Let cool slightly on a wire rack

Step 7: Coat or Glaze
While warm, toss the twists in cinnamon sugar OR
Drizzle with optional powdered sugar glaze once slightly cooled

Notes

Use Cold Puff Pastry – It puffs better and keeps its shape during baking
Don’t Overfill – A thin layer of filling prevents leakage and mess
Seal Edges Gently – Press lightly to help layers stick before cutting
Even Twists = Even Baking – Try to twist the strips similarly for uniform results
Bake Until Golden – Don’t underbake or they won’t be crisp
