Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips for a sweeter flavor)

For the Topping:

  • Whipped cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cake Base

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, egg, and melted butter. Stir until well combined. The mixture will be thick and dough-like—this is the cake base.

  4. Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form a crust-like base.

Step 2: Make the Gooey Chocolate Filling

  1. In another mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar together using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy.

  2. Add the chocolate chips to the cream cheese mixture and stir until fully combined. The mixture will be thick and sticky.

  3. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the chocolate cake base in the baking pan, smoothing it out to cover the entire surface.

Step 3: Bake the Cake

  1. Bake the cake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center is soft and slightly set.

  2. Be careful not to overbake, as the center should remain gooey and fudgy. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a little batter clinging to it—this indicates the cake is perfectly gooey.

Step 4: Cool and Serve

  1. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for at least 10-15 minutes before slicing. This allows the gooey filling to set slightly, making it easier to cut.

  2. Serve warm, topped with a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

Don’t Overbake – The key to the gooey filling is to bake the cake just enough so that the center remains soft and fudgy. Overbaking will result in a cake that’s more set than gooey.

Use Room Temperature Cream Cheese – Ensure the cream cheese is softened before mixing it with the powdered sugar for a smooth, lump-free filling.

Customize the Chocolate – You can adjust the type of chocolate chips based on your preference. Dark chocolate chips will give the cake a richer flavor, while milk chocolate chips will make it sweeter.

Serve with Ice Cream – For an even more indulgent treat, serve this cake warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
