Ingredients

Scale

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ½ cup milk (or more as needed)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons flour (to thicken the gravy)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (for extra depth of flavor)
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional, for a little extra warmth)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter (for sautéing)
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil the Potatoes – Add chopped potatoes to a pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for about 15 minutes or until fork-tender.
  2. Mash Them Up – Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy, adding more milk if needed. Cover and keep warm.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef and Gravy

  1. Sauté the Aromatics – In a large skillet, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft (about 3 minutes). Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  2. Brown the Beef – Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Make the Gravy – Sprinkle flour over the beef and stir well. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Add Liquids & Seasoning – Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring constantly. Add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until the gravy thickens.

Step 3: Assemble & Serve

  1. Plate It Up – Spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto a plate.
  2. Top with Gravy – Ladle the beef and gravy over the mashed potatoes.
  3. Garnish & Enjoy – Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color and serve hot!

Notes

  • Use the Right Potatoes – Russet potatoes make the fluffiest mashed potatoes, while Yukon Golds give a creamy texture.
  • Get Extra Creamy Mashed Potatoes – Add an extra splash of warm milk or a spoonful of sour cream for richer flavor.
  • Make it a One-Pan Meal – Instead of mashed potatoes, serve the beef and gravy over buttered egg noodles or rice!
